From the very beginning, owners Dennis Patterson and Teri Ann Faychild have believed that “the quality of the lives of the people who worked with them, was just as important as the quality of the work they do.” |
They believe by investing in the education of staff and community, that the quantifiable commitment to energy conservation will cultivate environmental awareness, and that the employees, the company, as well as the community, will benefit by utilizing the concepts of sustainability in daily life.
Over 65 % of the printing that BFP&L does is now done with UV Waterless Lithography. UV Waterless Lithography is one of the cleanest forms of printing in existence. Because there is no water, the need for chemicals to stimulate drying is not necessary and because the ink is cured by UV rays, there are no VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) given off in the printing process. BFP&L has installed an additional Waterless Offset Press to increase capacity. On the new press, they will be introducing Flat Bed Silk Screening and automatic fountain controls. The automatic fountain controls will reduce make-ready time along with the material associated with make-ready.
BFP&L converted to “Computer to Plate” technology in 2002, completely eliminating the chemicals traditionally used in the photographic printing process. They were the first in the wine label printing market to do this.
In 2007 BFP&L introduced recyclable cartons to the industry. These cartons are used at least four times before they are recycled into another material.
In 2008 BFP&L purchased three Hybrid vehicles for its sales staff.
BFP&L successfully completed an audit by SGS Systems & Services Certification in January for FSC and SFI certification. We have received our FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification and are waiting for the SFI (Sustainable Forestry Initiative) certification to arrive. Our registered FSC certification number is SGS-COC-005822.
FSC is a nonprofit organization devoted to encouraging the responsible management of the world’s forests. FSC sets high standards that ensure forestry is practiced in an environmentally responsible, socially beneficial, and economically viable way. Landowners and companies that sell timber or forest products seek certification as a way to verify to consumers that they have practiced forestry consistent with FSC standards.
While recycled fiber is a key element of the traditional model for responsible consumption, it is becoming increasingly clear that forest management in the production of the wood used in paper manufacturing has more fundamental importance than even recycled fiber.
The intent of the FSC system is to shift the market to eliminate habitat destruction, water pollution, displacement of indigenous peoples and violence against people and wildlife that often accompanies logging.
Just as with other forest products, in order to use the FSC logo as an “environmental claim” on paper, the product must have flowed through the FSC “chain-of-custody” from the FSC-certified forest, to a paper manufacturer, merchant, and finally printer, all who have FSC certification.
BFP&L has partnered with Napa Valley Recycling in reducing its land fill waste. We are proud to say that we have implemented single stream recycling and have increased our recycling contribution up to 75%. Our wood pallets are returned to our vendors for reuse or are picked up separately by Napa Valley Recycling and reused for other purposes.
BFP&L is continually working with its suppliers to test and bring to the market place not just recycled papers but substrates that include a high percentage of Post Consumer Waste. To this end our suppliers continue testing on papers that are 100% PCW. Current wine label stocks that are available with PCW in Pressure Sensitive are Envi 100 and Estate 10 (30% PCW) & Estate 12 (100% PCW). Current wine label stocks that are available in sheets are Neenah CWL 100%, Neenah Estate 12 and Monadnock Envi 100.
BFP&L is proud to announce that one of their Account Executives, Kristi Herold, has graduated from the green MBA Program at Dominican University, California. Kristi has been in the printing industry since 1982 and this certificate allows her new title of certified sustainability consultant (CSC) to keep BFP&L even greener.
